Anatomy of a 12-Digit UPC
Number System Character (Digit 1)
- 0, 1, 6, 7, 8: Standard Retail Items
- 2: Variable Weight (Meats/Cheese)
- 3: Health/Drug/Pharmacy

Manufacturer Code (Digits 2-6)
This unique sequence is assigned to the company that manufactures the product. All products from the same company share this manufacturer block.
Product Code (Digits 7-11)
Assigned by the manufacturer to a specific item. Each variation (Size, Color, Flavor) needs its own unique product code.
Check Digit (Digit 12)
Calculated mathematically from the previous 11 digits. Scanners use this to verify they read the barcode correctly. If the math doesn't match, the scan fails.
