How can we help you?

The ultimate encyclopedia for GTINs, barcodes, compliance, and marketplace strategies.

Core Concepts

What is the difference between a UPC and an EAN?

UPC (GTIN-12) is the 12-digit standard for North America (USA & Canada). EAN (GTIN-13) is the 13-digit standard for the rest of the world (Europe, Asia, Australia). NOTE: A UPC is technically just an EAN with a leading zero. If you buy a UPC from us, it works globally. If your international retailer asks for 13 digits, simply add a '0' to the front of your 12-digit UPC.

Do I need a separate code for every product variation?

Yes. This is the 'Golden Rule'. Every unique SKU needs a unique GTIN. Example: • Red Shirt, Small = 1 code • Red Shirt, Medium = 1 code • Blue Shirt, Small = 1 code Total = 3 codes. If you change size, color, flavor, count, or style, you need a new code.

Why don't I need to pay renewal fees?

Codes issued by the UCC (now GS1) prior to August 28, 2002, were sold outright, not leased. A class-action lawsuit settled in 2002 confirmed that original owners of these prefixes retain full ownership rights without the need to pay renewal fees. We purchase these 'grandfathered' prefixes and assign them to you. You are buying a legally owned asset, not renting a subscription.

Who Can Use It?

Who SHOULD use these codes?

These codes are perfect for: • Online Sellers (Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Google Shopping) • Independent Brands & StartupsLocal Retailers & BoutiquesFast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) • Food & Beverage (Grocery Stores) • Hardware & Automotive AftermarketAudio/Visual Media (CDs, DVDs)

Do these work for Google Shopping / Merchant Center?

Yes. Google requires a valid GTIN for most products to run Shopping Ads. Our codes are valid UCC-origin structures and will satisfy Google's `identifier_exists` requirement.

Restrictions & Warnings

Who CANNOT use these codes? (Crucial Warnings)

Please DO NOT purchase these codes for the following categories: 1. BOOKS: Books require an ISBN (International Standard Book Number), not a UPC. You must get this from your national ISBN agency (Bowker in the US). 2. PERIODICALS/MAGAZINES: These require an ISSN. 3. PHARMACEUTICALS: Controlled drugs require an NDC (National Drug Code) from the FDA. 4. MAJOR EDI RETAILERS: Large big-box chains using EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) often strictly require the 'Company Prefix' to match your specific brand name in the GS1 database. Avoid using our codes for: _Wal-Mart (Main Stores), Kroger, Costco, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, Macy's, and Bloomingdale's._ *Note: Wal-Mart Marketplace (Online) is usually fine, but physical store entry requires direct GS1 leasing.*

Sector Specifics

Food & Beverage Manufacturers

UPCs are standard for food items. However, do not confuse the UPC with the 'Nutrition Facts' labeler code or FDA registration. The UPC solely identifies the product for pricing/sales. You can absolutely use our codes for jams, sauces, snacks, and beverages sold in grocery stores (Whole Foods, local chains, etc.).

Music Industry (CDs / Vinyl)

A UPC is required for the physical album (the artwork/case). However, individual tracks require an ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) for digital tracking. Our UPCs cover the physical sales of your album perfectly.

Automotive Aftermarket

Auto parts sold on Amazon/eBay or in independent auto shops work great with our codes. If you plan to sell to major chains like AutoZone or O'Reilly, check their specific vendor guide first, as they may require EDI compliance.

Apparel & Clothing

Clothing is the most code-intensive sector due to size/color matrix. Ensure you buy a large enough package. A single T-Shirt available in 5 sizes and 4 colors requires 20 unique codes. Do not try to reuse the same code for a 'Small' and a 'Large'—this will cause inventory disasters.

Amazon Strategy

Amazon Error 5665 (Brand Name Mismatch)

This is the most common error. It means Amazon wants proof that 'Your Brand' exists before you can list it. It is NOT caused by the barcode itself. Solution: Amazon will ask for a photo of your product held in hand, showing your brand name permanently affixed to the packaging. Once approved, you can list products using that Brand Name and our UPCs.

Amazon Error 5461

This error occurs when Amazon checks the GS1 database and sees the prefix belongs to the 'Original Owner' (our supplier) and not 'Your Brand'. This is expected behavior for grandfathered codes. To bypass this: You may need to open a case with Amazon Seller Support and provide your 'Certificate of Assignment' (which we give you) and photos of your product. This proves you have the right to use the code.

Using 'Generic' on Amazon

If you do not have a trademark or do not want to go through Brand Registry, you can list your product brand as 'Generic'. Our codes work instantly and flawlessly for Generic listings without any complex approval process.

Retail Compliance

Walmart Marketplace vs. Walmart Stores

There is a huge difference. • Walmart Marketplace (Online): Operates like Amazon and generally accepts our codes without issue. • Walmart Physical Stores (Big Box): Have strict EDI vendor requirements that mandate a direct GS1-leased prefix. If you are only selling on Walmart.com, our codes are fine.

Local Retailers & Small Chains

99% of independent retailers, regional grocery chains, and boutique shops simply enter your code into their POS (Point of Sale) system manually. They do not care about the 'GS1 Database Owner'. As long as the barcode scans and beeps, they are happy.

Technical Specs

Barcode Printing Specs

Standard Size (100%): 1.469" x 1.02" • Minimum Size (80%): 1.175" x 0.816" • Quiet Zones: You MUST leave 0.25" of white space on the left and right of the bars. No text or graphics can intrude here, or the scanner will fail.

Colors & Contrast

Bars must be dark (Black, Dark Blue, Dark Brown). Background must be light (White, Yellow, Red). • NEVER print Red bars on a White background (scanners use red light and cannot see red bars). • NEVER print Black bars on a Dark Blue background (insufficient contrast).

Vector (EPS) vs Raster (JPG/PNG)

Always send the EPS file to your package designer. It is a vector file that can be scaled infinitely without pixelation. Use the PNG/JPG only for mockups or if you are printing from a standard office program like Word.

Glossary

GTIN

Global Trade Item Number. The numeric string encoded in the barcode.

Check Digit

The last (12th) digit of a UPC. It is calculated mathematically based on the previous 11 digits to ensure the code is valid. If you type a code incorrectly, the check digit will fail, and the scanner won't beep.

HRI (Human Readable Interpretation)

The numbers typed below the barcode bars. These are for humans to read if the barcode is damaged and needs to be manually typed in.
